    Solomon’s Wisdom, Hamas’ Cynical Stupidity

Reading about current events and the renewed Gaza demonstration incited by Hamas, I’m reminded of the well-known story recounting the wisdom of King Solomon (1 Kings 3:16-28) judging to whom a baby belonged that two women each claimed as theirs. The women came to Solomon to adjudicate their dispute. One of the woman’s babies had died, and each claimed the surviving baby as hers.

25 “Cut the baby in half! That way each of you can have part of him.” 26 “Please don’t kill my son,” the baby’s mother screamed. “Your Majesty, I love him very much, but give him to her. Just don’t kill him.” The other woman shouted, “Go ahead and cut him in half. Then neither of us will have the baby.” 27 Solomon said, “Don’t kill the baby.” Then he pointed to the first woman, “She is his real mother. Give the baby to her.”

Solomon declared the first woman the true mother, as a mother would even give up her baby if that was necessary to save its life.  Indeed, anyone who would agree to sacrifice her precious child was not only not the mother but had no right to the baby.

Today, a similar cynical story is unfolding before our eyes. Under Hamas’ terrorist rule, tens of thousands of Gazans are preparing a second week of protests at the Israeli border, this week planning to burn thousands of tires.

While creating a smokescreen under which to protest and instigate violence, any rational observer can see through their cynical tactics. And any rational observer can see through this at how Hamas’ actions are harmful on multiple levels.

The cloud (of smoke) has lifted on any semblance of the farce that the protests are meant to be peaceful. Palestinian terror groups of all stripes called upon Gazans to collect and burn 10,000 tires. Their “day of the tire” is going viral.

Burning thousands of tires was meant to create a smokescreen, shielding protesters, including terrorists, from the view of IDF. Palestinian Arab social media posts instructed Gazans wear clothes that won’t stand out, and keep their faces covered, for fear of Israeli drones taking pictures.

Writing to Director-General Tedros Adhanom of the World Health Organization, Maj. Gen. Yoav Mordechai, Israel’s Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories, called upon the WHO to prevent an “ecological catastrophe.”

“The Hamas terrorist organization, which controls the Gaza Strip, has issued an order to burn about 10,000 tires this Friday along the border with Israel,” he wrote. “The burning of tires in such a huge quantity will cause severe damage to the ecosystem in the area, will severely harm the life, flora, and health of the residents, and will (create) severe damage to the aquifer and lead to unprecedented air pollution.”

“This is a serious environmental issue that will harm the health of the residents… I call upon you, as the head of an organization whose goal is to promote health and protect natural and environmental resources, to do everything in your power to publicly warn against this ecological catastrophe and to protest Hamas’ irresponsible behavior.”

Environmentalists should be up in arms about this premeditated ecological disaster.

Human rights organizations should be lining up to protest how the smoke and toxins will harm the people, and how Hamas is putting tens of thousands in harm’s’ way.

Albeit that 20 plus Gazans were killed during the protests, the cynicism knows no borders as while hundreds of thousands die in Syria and across the Arab and Moslem world at the hands of other Moslems and Arabs, the only vocal protest is over the death of those inciting violence at, or threatening to breach Israel’s border.

The cynicism continues with protestors told only to bring Palestinian flags to create another smokescreen; that of the impression that this is a popular demonstration, not inspired or instigated by Hamas, and not to display the “true colors” of the various Palestinian Arab terror group with which they are affiliated.

Prime Minister Netanyahu’s spokesperson Ofir Gendelman noted that “Hamas will try to torch (Israel’s) border fence Israel with thousands of tires. This will burn down Palestinian fields and the heavy smoke, toxins and pollution will cause a huge environmental disaster for Palestinians. But Hamas doesn’t care. Remember that.” He added the terror group would lie claiming that Israel “used ‘a new poisonous gas’ against Palestinians, when in fact it was the one has INTENTIONALLY caused a cloud of TOXINS that will engulf Gaza.”

If the protests were truly peaceful, there’d be no reason to have any kind of smoke cover.  Hamas’ cynical environmental crime is transparent, to obscure the vision of IDF soldiers, and to obscure the identity of the terrorists who are instigating and, literally, igniting the masses.

Indeed, the recent alleged peaceful protests were anything but. Tens of thousands rioted along the Gaza border, orchestrated by Hamas. There were discrepancies in reports on the death toll: In the first week Hamas claimed 18. The Palestinian Authority claimed 16. Another 9 the following week. But were some deaths staged, faked for the media to lap up as has happened in the past? Questions and allegations abound.

Indeed, underscoring the terrorist instigation of violence and why Hamas wants to create a smoke screen for new protests, Israel named 10 of the dead as members of terror groups including Hamas, five of whom Hamas credited as its members, with Islamic Jihad later claiming another.

It’s hard to imagine how, if Hamas and other Palestinian Arab terror groups truly claim to advocate for their people, that they so wantonly and irresponsibly put them in harm’s way, both by encouraging violent protests as well as exposing them to the harmful smoke from thousands of tires.

It’s hard to imagine the Palestinian Arab narrative claiming the land as being theirs yet they are willing to burn it, destroy it, and ruin people’s livelihoods.

It’s certainly not hard to imagine the application of Solomon’s wisdom, that if such people are prepared to sacrifice something so precious that neither can have it, they don’t have a true claim.  Yes, they live among Israelis on a small piece of real estate that’s under dispute, but big enough to share.

These protests take place under what Hamas calls the “March of Return” which is expected to go on for several weeks, at least until the May 15 anniversary of what they call the “nakba,” the catastrophe of Israel’s declaration of independence.  It’s worth noting that any suggestion of this being peaceful, or that Hamas and other Palestinian Arab terrorists seek peace, is a farce.  Their “March of Return” puts the spotlight on one simple fact that needs to be highlighted; that our Palestinian Arab neighbors want neither peace nor two states, but the eradication of Israel and a return to all of what they call historical “Palestine.” To them, the original sin, the alleged “occupation” began not in 1967, but in 1948, and their “March of Return” underscores that clearly.

But the answer is not burning and destroying, but growing and building. Until, and if, Israel’s Palestinian Arab neighbors ever comprehend and embrace that, at best all they can hope for is half of a dead baby.

When I first saw him, he was unconscious, and there was a lot of blood on his face and chest,” recalled Yair Schussheim, a MAGEN DAVID ADOM paramedic, upon first seeing Yarin, an Israeli soldier. “I did not think he would survive.” Yarin was on patrol on Highway 60 in Israel when a terrorist struck him with a car. He suffered broken bones, head injuries causing brain damage, and extensive internal bleeding. His leg was nearly severed. There would have been no chance for this young soldier unless one of the most seasoned and well-trained paramedics in the world arrived within moments. Thankfully, that is exactly what happened. Yair Schussheim wasted no time on guesswork and loaded the young man into a Mobile Intensive Care Unit ambulance — essentially an emergency room on wheels — and sped toward the nearest trauma hospital. “I told the ambulance driver, ‘Floor the gas! Don’t stop!’” Yarin’s throat was full of blood, and he struggled for air. Immediately Schussheim and his team ventilated him and opened two IV lines. It was clear to Schussheim that this young man’s life was hanging in the balance. Every intervention and every bit of his experience was brought to bear to keep him alive until he could be transferred to a trauma team. It was a moment-by-moment battle for survival. Schussheim called the hospital on the way so they would be prepared. He explained the situation, the horrific incident, wounds, and everything he was doing to keep Yarin alive. He wanted the surgeons and trauma teams at the ER to be as ready as possible the moment they arrived. But in the paramedic’s heart, he fought back the unthinkable: He’s not going to survive. This young man who had been walking, talking, and defending Israel just minutes earlier was teetering on the brink of death. Schussheim continued employing every intervention possible as he fought for Yarin’s life. Yair Schussheim’s training equipped him to meet this crisis moment. In Israel, emergency medical technicians begin with 200 hours of training to save lives. But as a paramedic, Yair received nearly 10 times as much training. More specifically, he was trained to handle the worst-of-the-worst of all medical emergencies that can occur in the field. It is as if he was trained and handpicked for this moment. It is the support of friends like you that make this training possible. The minutes felt like hours as Schussheim focused all he had ever learned to keep this young soldier alive. And he did. Finally, they arrived at the hospital, and the responsibility for Yarin’s fate passed to the hands of the doctors. Dr. Miklosh Bala, a trauma surgeon at Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem, credits Yair’s decision-making as the key to the soldier’s survival. According to Dr. Bala, had Yair waited even minutes more, Yarin likely would have died. Yarin himself was shocked at the outcome. “I woke up in the hospital, and I had no idea how I am alive.” His mother, Riki, was overcome with grief at seeing her son. “I asked the entire nation of Israel to pray.” But her cries of despair turned to tears of joy as Yarin began to slowly recover. “He woke up against all odds. Thank God. And he was able to speak.” Yair visited Yarin after he gained consciousness. “I saw him and told him, ‘Now is the beginning of your new life; don’t give up.’” Yarin took his rescuer’s words to heart. While waking, speaking, and breathing on his own were the first miracles, next came standing on his own. So terrible were his injuries that he struggled to stay up on his own two feet. Yarin went to therapy every day, pushing through the pain and the failure. But he would not give up, even after falling and falling and falling again. His remarkable resilience was eventually rewarded when, one day, he spurred himself on with powerful words of resolve and determination: “No! Enough! I must stand!” Yarin endured months of grueling rehabilitation, and six months after the attack, he was almost fully recovered and able to attend a ceremony honoring the lifesaving paramedic. “A lot of patients do not survive those kinds of terrorist acts,” Schussheim said. “But he just didn’t give up; that’s all.” For Yarin, it was the least he could do for a man who he now considers family. “Yair is not just the paramedic who saved my life,” he said. “He is like my brother. I did not expect a connection like this.” Give to Help Save Lives in Israel The training Israel’s paramedics receive often means the difference between life and death. Of MAGEN DAVID ADOM’s corps of about 37,500 EMTs and volunteers, about 1,000 are paramedics. This elite group of frontline medical professionals undergoes more than 1,500 hours of rigorous training to care for those on the verge of life and death. There are many willing to devote their lives to this calling, but they CANNOT serve without the proper training and medical supplies. Your support can make that possible. Every trained and equipped paramedic can save thousands of lives over many years of service. Almost all that MAGEN DAVID ADOM does in Israel, from being responsible for the nation’s emergency services and blood supply to training its paramedics is made possible by generous donations from individuals who love Israel, just like you. Help Saves Lives As the most skilled medical professionals in the field, MAGEN DAVID ADOM paramedics work tirelessly, day in and day out, to answer the calls for help and save victims of the most horrific terror attacks, accidents, and emergencies. Many share the same perspective as Yair Schussheim. “People come into the world to some purpose, and my purpose is to help someone,” he said. “This is our destiny.” While many have praised Yair’s fast and lifesaving actions, he is quick to deflect the praise. “Yarin taught me that everything is possible because he is a miracle.” You can be a part of a miracle in Israel today when you give to support the lifesaving work of MAGEN DAVID ADOM. Your support makes it possible to equip, train, and dispatch paramedics in Israel every time there is a crisis.
