Many American-Israeli citizens are reconsidering their support of presidential candidate Donald Trump after a leaked 10-year-old video showed the brash billionaire making lewd comments about women.
Right-wing Member of Knesset Rabbi Yehudah Glick posted on Twitter that after months of doing his best to believe in Trump, “Enough is enough… I was wrong… Mr. Trump, go home.”
A number of liberal Israeli lawmakers also publicly expressed disgust with the Republican nominee.
However, Marc Zell, head of the Israeli branch of Republicans Overseas, predicted the current scandal would not lose Trump any votes among American-Israelis.
An estimated 200,000 Americans living in Israel have registered to vote in the upcoming US presidential election, which is now less than 30 days away. And, according to Zell, the majority of those voters intend to vote for Trump, “with all of his shortcomings.” Zell pointed out that despite Trump’s imperfections, Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton is still seen as far more dangerous for the Jewish state.
Additional Clinton emails released by Wikileaks over the weekend revealed that Israeli officials fear that as president, Clinton would fill her administration with many of the former Obama staffers who contributed to a deterioration in US-Israel relations in recent years.
Tzvika Brot, Trump’s campaign manager in Israel, added that while Trump’s improprieties were of a personal nature, many of Clinton’s were potentially illegal. Trump, after all, “isn’t running for chief rabbi,” quipped Brot. “Perfect leaders only exist in Hollywood.”
