At the same time President Obama inked a deal with Iran over its nuclear weapons program, thousands of passionately pro-Israel Christians from across the United States gathered in Washington, DC for the tenth annual Christians United For Israel (CUFI) summit.
Lead by fiery San Antonio-based pastor, John Hagee, and Executive Director David Brog, CUFI brought 5,000 Christians together to hear from experts on Israel, Iran, and Middle Eastern affairs. The event included a Candidates Forum, featuring interviews conducted by legendary journalist Bret Stephens with all of the Republican presidential contenders to date. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu addressed the conference via satellite, and Israeli Ambassador Ron Dermer gave an impassioned speech at Monday’s Night to Honor Israel ceremony. Interviews and speeches from the summit can be viewed here.
The highlight of the summit was Tuesday’s en masse lobbying foray to Capitol Hill, where summit attendees spent the afternoon meeting with their Congressional representatives and senators. The focus of the meetings was the just-announced deal with Iran, which CUFI believes will undeniably endanger both Israel and the United States. Congress has the power to reject the deal after a 60-day review period, and that is exactly what CUFI members are demanding from their Congressmen.
The impact of CUFI on Congress’s actions will be revealed in time, but Capitol Hill cannot afford to ignore the demands of over 2 million highly-motivated voters.
